New years resolution: read an article or chapter every week. #1: first article in "Mining the Home Movie, excavations in histories and memories" edited by Karen L. Ishizuka and Patricia R. Zimmermann, 2008.
I found this book just a couple months ago but read from it for first time today.
Richard Fung, discussion of stack of 8mm films he was sent from his early 60s childhood in Trinidad, which he received after moving to Canada in the 70s. Most interesting was his observation that the home movies appeared to reshape the family and situations to be middle class American through the selection of days to shoot (holidays and times where people had "Sunday best" clothes on) and situations seemingly inspired by "Good Housekeeping". See pages 32-33. Also, he cites Patricia Holland "Family Snaps; the meanings of domestic photography" and her observations on the woman being the keeper of family photo albums and family histories.
