Read "Film and Attraction: From Kinematography to Cinema" by Andre Gaudreault (translated from French), 2011.
One key argument is that the variety of visual devices such as flipbooks, praxiniscopes, etc should not be considered early or pre cinema because that assumes a predetermined or natural path towards cinema. These devices existed in their own right, not as stepping stones towards something else.
Notes:
page 66-67, institution defined as "a normative power subjecting individuals to certain practices, on pain of sanction". Basically, as filmmaking becomes institutionalized by commercial practices, exhibition venues, studios, etc, there come to be rules which must be followed.
Page 106-107: film theory vs film criticism, "shaping taste" is not for university to do. In quoting Francois Alberta, he considers it an act of arrogance that professors would teach adult age students what good taste in films are.
Page 108 "obscurantism"
